Christmas is over

Hey folks!

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays, and this year was no different. What a wonderful opportunity we have to remember the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ. Here's a couple of cool things about our Christmas holiday:

1. Of course, we got to talk to our families!

2. We played some awesome holiday basketball.

3. My awesome family sent me summer sausage, one of our family's Christmas traditions.

It was a good holiday season.

On Christmas we got to spend our evening with a nice couple in our ward, the Bawdens. While we talked to our families we ate some rad apple pie, built Lego Bionicles, played some marvelous Monopoly, and then we hurried home. The day after Christmas was a little rough. It's hard to go back to work after Christmas, but by Friday we were ready to go!

Being a missionary is so great. Working is so great! The Gospel is so great. We are so blessed.

Have a terrific new year!

Love,
Elder Gillie

The good, the bad and the ugly

Hello all you folks!

What a week it was! Good grief, it was something else. I'll break it down.

THE GOOD

Zone conference was on Thursday, and it was fantastic! Talk about a way uplifting meeting. Every training that was given was revelation. We had the Spirit like a river. After President Meredith gave his talk (which was excellent) we heard from our Area Seventy, Elder Packer. He talked about getting the members in the bay area excited about doing missionary work. The Spirit bore witness that what he said was true, and I felt super refreshed.
We also had a rad white elephant gift exchange at zone conference. Here's a picture of me wearing my gift.

What an attractive man...

Another cool thing about this week is that Elder Vance and I have been opening our mouths a lot more and talking to more people on the street. How neat is that? We've definitely felt the Lord giving us enthusiasm and energy as we put our faith in Him and talk to more people.

THE BAD

Now that we've baptized a lot of people, we have no one left to teach. Seriously...we have investigators, but they're impossible to meet with. So Elder Vance are fortunate in that we have a lot of time to find new investigators! Tons and tons of the appointments we set up this week fell through, but that gave us even more time to find! Wahoo!

THE UGLY

Inline image 2

This was a few weeks ago. But I was struggling to come up with something for this category.

I know that Gospel is true. I know that the Atonement is real. When we have faith in the Savior and repent of our sins, are baptized, and receive the Holy Ghost, the Savior brings so much joy into our lives. I know that this is true! I love the Gospel, and I love the message that we missionaries share. It will bless the live of each man and woman who heeds it, times infinity.

Have a great week!

Love,
Elder Gillie

This is different...

Hello my friends!

It was one heaven of a week! Since Elder Watkins got shipped off to Antioch on Tuesday, I was vagabond for a couple of days. I spent all of Tuesday and most of Wednesday downtown with the zone leaders, and it was hardcore! Biking downtown always makes my thighs sore. You might say it makes me a little upthight. Har har har.

Wednesday night I picked up my new companion from the mission home! His name is Elder Vance from Murray, UT. He is super energetic and willing to work! He's got a good sense of humor too, so we have a lot of fun. Here's us being cool:

Inline image 2

This week we had tons of appointments fall through. I was stressed out of my mustache! Elder Vance was like, "Uh, what is even going on here?" It was a crazy weekend. But then it ended up really well! On Saturday Nguyen was baptized. It was awesome!

Inline image 1

The Christmas devotional last night was pretty great too. Who knew that Christmas could be so much better when we focus it on the Savior Jesus Christ? You think someone would have told us by now.

The restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is true. It's the only sure-fire to find happiness in this world and eternal life in the world to come.

Have a good life this week!

The worst week ever.

On Saturday night, I found out from my ward mission leader that Alabama lost. I literally almost cried. Well, not literally, but it totally crushed my effectiveness for the rest of the night. On Sunday, it got even worse. Everyone in the Elders Quorum knows I'm a hardcore Alabama fan, so they really let me have it. Good thing I'm really humble and I don't let things like that get me down.

Well, it wasn't really the worst week of my life. It was actually a great week! Our transfer call came three days early, because Elder Watkins has been called to be a zone leader in Antioch! Crazy, right? He's been an awesome trainer/district leader here in San Francisco, and he'll be an awesome zone leader across the bay. As for myself, I am...STAYING here in the South San Francisco East area! I'm not sure yet who my new companion will be, but we're going to have a rockin' good time.

I realized that whenever I do leave, it'll be really sad. When Elder Watkins was taking pictures with and saying goodbye to Nguyen and Lona after church on Sunday, I felt super sad for him. I'm so grateful that the Lord has put such great people in my life. One of the greatest blessings I've had in these past couple months has been the relationships I've been able to make. There are some really special people here in San Francisco, and I'm grateful that I get to work with them.

We have a baptism coming up in just 5 days! We're really excited for Nguyen. She has tons and tons of faith. Here's a funny story- we forgot to explain baptism to her. She knew she was making a covenant with God, but we somehow kind of forgot to mention the water part to her. Whoops!

Thanks for all of the support! Y'all are great.

Love,
Elder Gillie

And thus we see....

...that Mormons are and always will be the most photogenic people in the world...

It's been a proven fact since 1830.

THE GOOD
Tiffany has like infinity faith. Satan tried so hard to stop this baptism from happening, but Tiffany laid the spiritual smackdown on him. Here's a funny story about the baptism- there was a baptism for a different ward on the same day scheduled before ours. We asked the sisters in charge of that baptism to leave the font full for ours, and they said, "oh, of course!" We had planned on arriving at the baptism an hour early. We stopped by a potential investigator on the way, but he kind of talked for ever, so we didn't get to the church until half an hour before the baptism. Right as we walked in we met the guy in charge of the font. He had just emptied it...and we almost freaked. So we turned on the water full blast and it actually filled in time...but it was freezing. I think Tiffany almost went into cardiac arrest.

Elder Watkins and I sang "Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy" during the service. It wasn't awful. My voice didn't even crack.

THE BAD
Nothing bad at all happened this week.

THE UGLY
I look like a goof in that picture. I'll need to work on that.

Life is great. Serving a mission is definitely hard work, but it's wonderful. The Spirit is the most wonderful gift God has given to us in this life. When we have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of our sins, are baptized, and receive the Holy Ghost, we have the Spirit to be with us. As we continue to have faith and repent, the Holy Ghost is our constant companion. It brings joy and peace to our lives. It cleanses us of our sins. It changes our nature so that we are more Christlike. It gives us a foretaste of eternal life. I know that by the power of the Holy Ghost, all men may come to know that Jesus Christ has restored the fulness of the Gospel to the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. How great is His mercy for doing so! I know that Jesus Christ is the Savior of all men, and that as we come unto Him, we find true joy.

May the Lord bless you all,

Elder Gillie

Day 83

Another good week in the books! Things are looking good in the South San Francisco ward. We have a baptism this weekend! And if all works out, we and the sisters in our ward will have a baptism on each of the next four weekends! The members are super awesome- we rarely have lessons that aren't member-present lessons.

Other than than, everything's about the same here! It gets foggy pretty often, and it's starting to get kind of chilly. But really it's not too bad. As far as weather goes, we have one of the best missions.

We fount out Boyd K Packer might be coming to our mission for zone conference.

Oh, and we found two more investigators this week who are likely to accept an invitation to be baptized. I'll tell you about them.

We found Analee through a referral from a couple weeks ago. She met the Chinese sisters in San Bruno a while ago and said she'd like to learn more. We met with her on Monday and taught her the message of the Restoration, and she loved it! She said she's been looking for peace and happiness for 5 years, and she feels like God has led us to her. We're like, "no way, we feel like that too." Hopefully we'll see her tonight and set a date for her to be baptized.

Karina also came from a referral from forever ago. She's been hard to reach but we finally got to teach her on Thursday! We actually taught her at her son's football practice at a high school. It was a little hard to teach there, but we weren't too close to the game. We were freezing our fannies off. When we invited her to be baptized, she said, "oh yeah, i was planning on doing that if I felt that it was true." Holy surprising response! We feel she's pretty close to setting a date as well.

Life is all good, my friends. God knows us individually and is guiding us each day.

Elder Gillie

Week Nine in the Field!

All is well in Zion...psych! But lots of things are well. I'll give you the good, the bad, and the ugly.

THE GOOD

We baptized Lona's socks off on Saturday! Here's a picture-

Inline image 1

And here's a funny story about it. I was ending the baptism prayer as per the usual, and I said, "and of the Holy Gh-*voice crack*-ost, amen." And I was a little flustered, so I kind of dunked her pretty hard. It was funny though. We laughed, and she was really really happy. She was confirmed the next day and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Concerning the awesomeness of these blessings, she said most reservedly, "It's great." Future relief society president right here, ladies and gentlemen.

We met with Nguyen yesterday after church. It was our first lesson with her. She had heard about the church from her brother who met with missionaries in some far off land. We started by teaching her a little about God and Jesus Christ, and told her that when she learned about our message, she would want to be baptized. So she asked us, "How long do I have to wait until I can be baptized?" How about that? She's getting baptized on the 30th of this month. It's pretty neat. In the last month, the Lord has brought 3 of his children to us who were totally prepared to accept the Gospel. How blessed we are!

We went to the Oakland Temple Visitors Center with Tiffany on Thursday, and she loved it! We watched a movie about Joseph Smith, the prophet of the Restoration. It was called "Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration." It reminded me of how good the Lord is for calling a prophet in these days, and for giving us the Book of Mormon. I almost got emotional during the scene where he was martyred, but then I punched myself before things got out of hand.

THE BAD

It hurt when I punched myself.

THE UGLY

Satan can be a dirtbag sometimes, telling people that "There cannot be any more Bible" and that the Lord "has already done his work." I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God just as the Bible is. Why would anyone not want more of God's holy scripture? Sheesh.

Even though missionary work is pretty hard, we find ways to have fun. Last week after writing emails we went bowling as a district, and probably had too much fun. It's weird how after being a missionary for only a couple months, I'm so easily entertained. I wonder why that is.

Excellent Week

Hello everybody!

Real quick, I realized that my sister-in-law is posting my letters to Facebook. So if you want to keep receiving this email from me anyway, go ahead and just send me a short message telling me.

Life is super swell right now! The work in San Francisco is going great, and my companion and I get to be here for all of it.

Thing That's Good No. 1- We have a BAPTISM this weekend! Lona Kwan is following the example of Jesus Christ and getting dunked by someone holding the Priesthood authority of God this SATURDAY! She's progressing super well. Even though she's way quiet and pretty timid, it seems like she's finally comfortable with being at a new church. She loves the Gospel, she loves the Book of Mormon, and she loves her new church family. She asked if I would baptize her on Saturday and if Elder Watkins would confirm her on Sunday. Wahoo!

Thing That's Good No. 2- We have another investigator, TIffany, getting BAPTIZED! She's getting baptized on the 23rd. This is old news...(olds?)... but it's still good. Her boyfriend has some doubts about "that Mormon thing" but he's starting to get more into religion. In fact, he's even planning on marrying Tiffany pretty soon. Gadzooks! She loves church, especially Relief Society, and she's way way cool. Just a couple more weeks for her!

Thing That's Good No. 3- We got fed 6 days this week. I weighed in at 161...11 pounds more than I had back in August. I guess that's good, because I need to store away energy for the frigid San Franciscan winter.

Thing That's Good No. 4- We got amormon.org referral for a woman named Nguyen this week. We stopped by her place on Saturday to meet her, but she wasn't there. Right as we were about to leave, she arrived at the door, just getting home from school. So we introduced ourselves, talked a little about what she knew about the church, what she was looking for, etc..., invited her to church and scheduled to meet with her the next week. Here's a cool story- She's pretty much the exact same person as Lona. Lona referred herself through mormon.org because she was interested in learning more about how God could bless her life, just like Nguyen. We met her at her doorstep right as she got home from school, just like Nguyen. She's a 20-year-old Asian girl who goes to City College, just like Nguyen. Seriously, the deja vu was hardcore. She came to Sacrament meeting yesterday and really liked it! We're gonna baptize her...she just doesn't know it.

Thing That's Good No. 5- We finally got in touch with Brother Starks. He wasn't answering our calls or texts and we got worried that he was having second thoughts, but all is well. I totally invited ourselves over for dinner this week, and he gladly obliged. His wife is making dinner for us tomorrow. (this is where I pump my fist in the air.)

Spiritual Thought- In the MTC we watched a talk by David A. Bednar called "Character of Christ." It talked about how to be Christlike, all we really need to do is to think about others when we'd rather think about ourselves. Here's an example to make that more clear:

Let's say it's 8:00 in the evening. Elder Gillie is teaching a lesson to a potential investigator, and he's really tired. Natural-man-Elder Gillie thinks to himself, "I'm tired. Let's just get out of this lesson as quick as we can and go home." So he and his companion quickly run through the message of the Restoration through Joseph Smith, set a return appointment, and go home.

If Christ were in that situation, he would say to himself, "Oh, I sure want this potential investigator to be happy. I know that the Gospel will make him happy, so I'm going to help him come closer to his Father in Heaven." Notice how His desires are centered on helping others be happy, not on his own appetites or wants. He showed an example of this in the Garden of Gethsemane when, after having suffered the Atonement, he lovingly healed the soldier's ear.

Cool application of Elder Gillie's spiritual thought- If you're ever feeling lousy, just turn your thoughts to helping someone else be happy. You don't have to wash your feet with your hair, but just think about what you can do to help them just a little bit. Then go and do that, 1 Nephi 3:7-style.

I know that the message that we missionaries share is true. Jesus Christ has revealed the fulness of the Gospel to His servant, the prophet Joseph Smith, and commanded that it be declared to everyone on the earth. I know it is true because of the witness that the Holy Ghost has given me. Christ is beckoning all men to come and hear His message, because He knows it will bless every person who heeds it.

I love you all tons, and sometimes I remember to pray for you.

Love,
Elder Gillie

Two Month Mark!

That's right, two months ago I entered the Missionary Training Center! Officially 1/12 of the way done. Only 22 more months, but who's counting?

This past week has been pretty darn great! The Lord has been blessing the South San Francisco area a lot. Here's the goods-

1. We have a new investigator named Tiffany. We taught her on Friday and invited her to be baptized. And of course she said YES, because what else would she say? The Gospel is true, so why would anyone say no? She came to church for the first time yesterday, and she loved it!
2. Lona is progressing well. We taught her at the home of a nice couple. She really liked hearing about what happens after we die. The Spirit was pretty strong, and she knew that what was being taught was true. When she prayed with us, she thanked God for helping her know the Gospel and said, "I can't wait to learn even more." When she said that, the best feeling came over me, and I knew that the Lord was happy with her!
3. It's been foggy like every day in San Francisco for the last week. The fog will come in and cover the city in a matter of minutes. It's sick.
4. Wearing khaki is awesome.
5. During Sacrament meeting, I was sitting by a less-active that we teach each week. In one of the hymns, my voice cracked, and she laughed at me. It made that chapel feel like home.

Life is good. When I work my very hardest, I feel the Lord guiding me every day. I know that He has restored the Gospel to the Earth, and Christ's true church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Love y'all,
Elder Gillie

Transfer 1 = OVER

Hello my friends!

Transfer calls came Saturday night. Good news! I am...STAYING! For my second transfer I will remain in the South San Francisco East area, being trained by my awesome companion Elder Watkins. I'm super excited to be here! The work is going better in SSF for a lot of reasons. Most importantly, the members here are starting to feed us more. The missionary meal calendar was passed around and we're getting fed dinner 8 times in the next 10 days. We also have members scheduled to come teach with us every day for the next week. The bishop has been increasingly supportive of the missionary work, and the members respect us. It's probably because I got my suits at Men's Wearhouse. They like the way I look.

Our only progressing investigator, Lona, is coming along really well! We taught her the Plan of Salvation, Word of Wisdom, and Law of Chastity the other day, and she committed to live both those laws. It was my first time teaching the law of chastity, and I definitely will need some more practice. After telling her that it dealt with being sexually pure, I totally blanked for a few seconds, and the member with us saved my bacon and expounded on it. Fortunately she's a cool person, so it worked out and wasn't too awkward. Phew.
We took her to church yesterday, and she loved it! She felt the Spirit, and the members of the ward really stepped up in fellowshipping her. We'll be teaching her at a member's house later this week.

Here's a cool story: on Thursday we were going to teach Lona, but it didn't happen because she had a school assignment come up that she had to take care of. So we decided to go see a less active member, Brother Starks. Bro Starks is a total stud. He is bald and has a bunch of cool tattoos on his head and arms, and a bunch of earrings. Haha, he's a stud with studs. I just came up with that...so funny. He also has a bunch of grotesque plastic heads hanging from the ceiling in his living room because he's cool like that. Oh, and he hasn't been active in 30 years, since he was a teenager.
So he let us in and talked to us about his childhood for a while. We asked him a little bit about his testimony. I was inspired by the Holy Ghost to ask him, "Do you believe you can have a testimony again?" He sat there for a full minute and then said, "I don't think it was a coincidence that you're here right now." He started crying and eventually told us he wants to come back to church and that he wants the Gospel to be back in his life. He said that had he known it was us knocking on his door, he wouldn't have answered, and he knew God brought us there. And he told me that my tie was ugly and he gave me one of his. How neat is that?

Brother Starks came to church yesterday for the first hour, and we'll be meeting with him regularly to help him become active. Truly the Lord works miracles in the lives of His children. I know that he lead us there to Brother Starks' home. That's pretty neat!

Good luck to you all. May the Lord bless you in every aspect of your lives,

Elder Gillie

Confessions of a New Missionary as He Stands at a Laptop in an Apple Store

he good thing about San Francisco is that it's got normal things like malls. And technology and cars and stuff. And Apple stores where we can walk in and use their computers to email people. It's pretty loud here.

4 and a half weeks in, and being a missionary is still great! San Francisco is probably the coolest city ever. The other day some cool dude was walking down the street singing with a beautiful soprano falsetto. I thought, "Dang, that guy would be great in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!" And then he saw us and told us bleeping Mormons to go bleep off because no one bleeping wants us here. He had a cool voice though, so we happily obliged.

Last night was probably one of the best days of my mission yet! We took our progressing investigator, Lona, to a fireside in Oakland called "Why I Believe" where newly baptized converts bear their testimonies. Lona said she was touched, and that she felt emotional in the meeting. Woohoo! After that we took her to the Oakland Temple visitors' center and showed her a presentation about families, which she really loved. She's getting baptized in November, and she's accepting the Gospel like a sponge. The Lord is so great for leading her to us!

Scripture of the week- 1 Nephi 17:13 "And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that is is by me that ye are led."

The Lord is always with us, He is guiding us towards our promised land if we keep His commandments, which are found in the Bible, Book of Mormon, and the words of the prophets. If we are obedient, not only will we be led, but we will know the God who leads us. And who wouldn't want that, right?

I don't have time to write back to all of you, but I'll try to get to you next week!

Love,
Elder Gillie

Post-Conference Good Things

What an awesome week it was!

Lots of things went really great this week! We taught more lessons this week than any other week- 13. Not nearly as many as we would have liked, but more people are listening to us.The weather this week was pretty much perfect. It's supposed to be pretty foggy here by the ocean, but almost every day is perfectly sunny, usually in the 60s or 70s. Love it!

General conference was the greatest thing ever! For the first time, I paid attention hardcore for all 10 hours! And when it was over, I was sad, because I feel like I could listen to the prophet and apostles teach us forever!

God truly leads this church through a living prophet. Jesus Christ has truly restored His church, and it is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The teachings of the prophets and apostles are truly inspired! If they weren't, the Holy Ghost wouldn't burn in our hearts like they do when we hear our leaders teach. I was able to find many answers to the questions I've had as a new missionary. My faith has increased, kicking out what fear I've had. It's awesome! But the best was yet to come.

Last night we taught a young woman named Lona. She's 20, goes to school here in SF, and way cool. She asked for missionaries on mormon.org. We taught her about the Restoration of the Gospel through Joseph Smith and about the Book of Mormon. The Spirit was super strong. She was receiving it really well! So I invited her to be baptized (my first baptismal invitation so far) and she said yes!!!!! WAHOOO!!! I was grinning like a total dweeb, but who cares? She's getting baptized onNovember 2. We have a lot of work to do to get her ready and to help her increase her faith, but we know the Lord will guide her to baptism if we have faith. Hardcore, right? I'm so excited. The Lord is so good to His children.

If your faith is waning like mine was a little bit ago, just look for ways to keep the Lord's commandments, and trust in His power. You will not be left alone.

May the Lord bless you all,
Elder Gillie

September 23, 2013

Hello everybody!

So I'm finally here in the mission field! For my first area, I've been assigned to serve in...San Francisco! Our area covers the south-eastern part of the city. Not quite as crazy as downtown city, but still pretty crazy.

Missionary life is great! It's definitely been hard. We wake up at 6:30, pray, exercise, shower, have personal scripture study for an hour, have companion study  for an hour, and then have an extra hour for in-field training. Then we eat lunch, and then we teach people the Gospel from 12 to 9, with an hour for lunch. It's hardcore. Then we plan for the next day, write in our journals, and then go to sleep. The days are very long, but I get 8 hours of sleep every night, which is nice.

So there are great things about being a missionary and hard things about being a missionary. It's definitely been the hardest three weeks I've had in the past month. It's hard to go from doing whatever I want all the time to giving up all of my time to the Lord. I'm basically doing missionary work from the moment I wake up until 9:30at night. It's wonderful to serve, but it's taken some adjusting.

Adjustment number uno- Loving people
The hardest thing about my mission so far has been overcoming my selfishness. I'm not Ebenezer Scrooge by any means, but I'm definitely focused on serving my own needs. I like being happy, so usually everything I do is to make myself happy. As a missionary, I'm supposed to devote my time and talents to helping other people find happiness. It feels super good to teach people the Gospel, but it'll take some time to turn outwards and want to serve with all of my heart.

Adjustment number dos- Staying with the same guy 24/7 for 6 weeks.
As a missionary, I'm assigned a companion. We've got to stay within sound and sight of each other constantly for the whole time we're together, which is 6 weeks. Fortunately, my companion is awesome. His name is Elder Watkins. I know because his nametag says Elder Watkins. He's super chill, and dedicated to being a good missionary. But 6 weeks is a long time...

So these things have been hard. But the blessings totally outweigh the sacrifice. My faith has really been strengthened. I've been thinking a lot about Jesus Christ and His role as our Savior. I've always believed that He is real and that He is the Savior, but as I've learned about Him, taught about Him, and relied on His strength, that belief has turned to knowledge. Every day, I look at a picture of Jesus Christ in my apartment, and I think about Him and what He did for us. I think about how He loves me, and how I love Him. Even though sometimes I wake up and think, "what am I doing here?" I always eventually remember how wonderful this Gospel is. When I teach people the message of the restored Gospel, I feel the Holy Ghost testify to them, and I remember that for two years, I have the chance to help people change their lives. And that's pretty darn sweet.

So since we're San Francisco, we see a ton of weirdos. I have to remind myself that they're also God's children and try to love them. A couple days ago, we taught a man named Derrick. He's a cross-dresser whose main objective in life right now is to find a wife. That was an interesting lesson...We also talk to a few stoned people on the street. That's always pretty fun too.

Last night the elders in Half-Moon Bay got a voicemail from an anonymous dude. The 5-minute long message was basically him telling the elders why they were wrong, that we can't know what happens after we die, that Joseph Smith was a fraud (according to Google, an obviously credible source), and that we've been brainwashed into believing all this. Back home, I probably would have been bothered by this, but we just laughed when we heard it. The man was so adamant in his belief that we've been brainwashed. I wondered what I would say to the man if he were talking to me. I know that what we missionaries teach is true. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and that God restored His Gospel through him. I know that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. Why else would I give up two years of my life to be doing this?

The Gospel is so good, and I know it's true. It's as simple as that!

Y'all be excellent to each other.

May the Lord bless you all,
Elder Gillie

September 10, 2013

Thank you all for the letters you've been sending the last two weeks! I leave the mtc tomorrow, so my president told me to tell you not to send anymore mail to the MTC. Send it to the mission home address listen on my Facebook. If I haven't responded, don't worry...it's on my to-do list. I've just been super busy.

Thanks!

Elder Gillie
